4. Habitat

Sharks are found in every major body of saltwater in the world, but are more common in warmer waters. Various species inhabit shallow coastal habitats, deep-water ocean floor habitats, and the open ocean.

Some less common habitat examples:

  • Bull sharks can survive extremely well in fresh water
  • Sleeper sharks stay in the chilly Arctic waters all year round
  • Elasmobranches inhabit tropical and temperate seas as well as some cold and polar seas and freshwater lakes
  • Bigeye houndsharks have been found at the bottom of the Red Sea
